Visit Coyote's Fishnet
In the nimíipuu creation story, Iceye'ye (Coyote) flung a fishnet up a steep hillside in what is now north-central Idaho, creating a landscape feature that the Nez Perce people have recognized and pointed out for generations. This sacred site remains visible from the highway today.
About This Site
Coyote's Fishnet is a private property site, so visitors cannot access it directly. However, the landscape feature is visible and notable from U.S. Highway 12, making it part of the broader storytelling landscape that connects the nimíipuu to the lands they have lived on and traveled through since time immemorial.
Viewing the Site
The site is located approximately 6 miles east of Lewiston, Idaho on U.S. Highway 12 East. There is a pullout along the highway where you can safely view the rock formation and reflect on the story connected to this place. The landscape itself tells the story that Coyote left behind.
