Visit Heart of the Monster

At this sacred site near Kamiah, a rock formation marks where Iceye'ye (Coyote) killed a great monster in the nimíipuu creation story, an act that created the Nez Perce people themselves. Interpretive exhibits and trails invite you to understand this spiritual place.

Getting There

Heart of the Monster is a 53-acre site located off U.S. Highway 12 East at mile marker 68, approximately 60 miles east of the park visitor center in Lapwai, and about 2 miles upstream from the bridge that crosses the Clearwater River in Kamiah.

From Kamiah, turn right onto U.S. 12 E and follow signs. The site is 2 miles east of town.

What You'll See

An interpretive shelter houses exhibits explaining the role of legends in Nez Perce culture and tells part of the Coyote and Monster story in both nimipuutímt (Nez Perce) and English. An audio program offers deeper understanding. A short 0.2-mile paved trail leads to the "Heart" rock feature and a small semicircle of seating. Those wanting more of a walk can return via an unpaved scenic trail to the west and north, making a 0.5-mile loop.

RV parking, restrooms, water, and picnic tables are available. This is a place of spiritual significance to the Nez Perce—please treat it with the respect and reverence it deserves.

Hours & Access

Heart of the Monster is open from sunrise to sunset daily year-round. There is no entrance fee.
