Visit White Bird Battlefield
On June 17, 1877, the first battle of the Nez Perce War began here when the cavalry moved to strike the nimíipuu sheltering in Lahmotta canyon. The U.S. cavalry was defeated, and the Nez Perce began their long journey seeking safety.
Getting There
White Bird Battlefield is approximately 15 miles south of Grangeville, Idaho between U.S. Highway 95 and the White Bird Grade. The town of Whitebird is about 0.5 miles from the trailhead.
From Grangeville, head south on U.S. Highway 95 for 12.7 miles to the White Bird Overlook and shelter. From there, continue south for 3.5 miles to White Bird Road. The trailhead is nearby at the bottom of the canyon.
What You'll See
An interpretive shelter at a large pullout along U.S. Highway 95 above the battlefield provides exhibits and orientation. A 12-page trail booklet guides a self-led hike through the landscape where the battle unfolded. The trailhead is accessible from the bottom of the canyon along River Road.
The landscape itself tells part of the story: rolling hills and canyons where the nimíipuu were sheltering before the cavalry advance.
